Three lessons from Steve Jobs

The business and technology worlds lost one of their brightest with the passing of Steve Jobs last week. The man who created – and recreated – Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) was clearly both the driving force and marketing genius behind one of the world’s favouriteste consumer electronics brands.

Jobs, with partner Steve Wozniak, started Apple in the fabled garage, before famously being sacked by the Apple board some years later, only to return triumphantly to steer Apple through its second act.

In between, Jobs put his immense energy and creativity into the Pixar movie studio he bought from George Lucas for a relative pittance (around US$10 million including a cash injection into the business) in 1986. He later sold Pixar to Disney for US$7.4 billion!

The life of Steve Jobs has lessons for technologists and leaders, and I believe there are some key lessons to be learned by investors to improve the quality of our company analysis.

Passion matters
Steve Jobs retained perspective throughout his life. His writings and videos of his speeches (of which his Stanford commencement address is the best known) show a man who was able to separate himself from the crowd – avoiding "groupthink" and keeping a relentless focus on excellence.
In today’s sanitised business (and political) world, there is an abundance of market research. Many businesses and political parties continually research new ideas by asking groups of people in the target market for their views on a new idea or a new product.

Steve Jobs may well have tested his new ideas in market research, I don’t know. What we do know is that he took a very single-minded approach to new products. He chose to be innovative and he chose to be creative.

Jobs said "You can't just ask customers what they want and then try to give that to them. By the time you get it built, they'll want something new".

Focus on the user
Jobs – and by extension Apple – had a very specific product development method. They took a "Field of Dreams" approach; if you build it, they will come. To that end, the team at Apple simply focused on making a great product. They wanted to create something they were proud of; something they themselves wanted to use.

It takes a degree of guts (and perhaps arrogance) to assume that your own desires can be translated into a mass-market offering but for Apple, it worked. Importantly, Apple didn’t compromise on passion or quality, instead believing that excellence would bring its own rewards:
“A lot of companies have chosen to downsize, and maybe that was the right thing for them. We chose a different path. Our belief was that if we kept putting great products in front of customers, they would continue to open their wallets.”

The vision thing
The business career of Steve Jobs was one of a visionary who knew what he wanted to create, a leader who could variously inspire and drive a team of like-minded individuals, and a marketer who built one of the most powerful brands of our time – twice.
Commentators (and investors themselves) tend to lump investors into groups – value v growth and technical v fundamental most common amongst them. I’m sure investors have bought and sold Apple over the years quite happily as members of the groups in this paradigm.
What none of these artificial divisions tend to prioritise highly enough is the organisation itself. Not the business or the brands – though these are important – but the leadership and culture.

Foolish take-away
Warren Buffett was right when he said “When a management with a reputation for brilliance tackles a business with a reputation for bad economics, it is the reputation of the business that remains intact.”
However, as long as the business economics are attractive, management quality – and the culture it creates – can add immense value to an investor’s returns. Steve Jobs is likely to be an extreme example, but when you dig into the truly impressive organisations, the best of the best, you find management and a culture that is unusually strong.
Next time you go to the balance sheet, the growth numbers or the share price chart, take a minute (or more) to ask yourself whether you know enough about the company’s management and culture. You’ll almost certainly make a better decision when you can answer that question in the affirmative.

Did TV5 Offer Derek Ramsay a Multi-Million Peso Contract?

“Wala pa, wala pang specific number or anything that was offered to me. I have been approached, yes, but like I said, I won’t entertain anything unless my contract is expired.
It was a rumoured before and yet some report are confirming that Derek Ramsay was allegedly offered a multi-million peso contract with another TV station and that is from TV5.
According to a report, Ramsey denied the rumors saying

So even with ABS-CBN, ‘di pa ako nakipag-upo para makipag-negotiate for a new contract. But with the other network, wala pang specific na bigay sa akin.”
On the other hands, Vice Ganda’s leading man in the upcoming comedy film “Praybeyt Benjamin” said that he is not closing his doors on the possibility of considering a possible transfer to other network but his ABS-CBN contract is still up until February of next year.
Ramsey was also rumoured to be the next box office king after the success of his current movie “No Other Woman” with Cristine Reyes and Anne Curtis.

Shamcey Supsup activated the colonial mentality in us filipinos

The nation’s current darling, Miss Universe 3rd runner up Shamcey Supsup, did more than just win hearts and minds. She unwittingly activated one of the biggest flaws of our Filipino damaged culture — the colonial mentality.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not criticizing Shamcey and I certainly have a very high regard for her. Shamcey is not just beautiful and smart but from her statements — she seems to possess the right values. I sincerely hope she shuns showbiz. Nothing compromises a person’s class and reputation faster in this country than showbiz.

When Shamcey spoke in English at the Miss Universe Beauty Pageant, while most of the contestants from non-English speaking countries spoke in their native languages, she only followed the training and instructions that were given to her. It has been a tradition for our beauty pageant contestants to try to impress the judges and the audience with our “command” of English. Only Filipinos think that other nationals are impressed by our irrational adoration of the English language.

For following tradition and speaking in English, Shamcey Supsup cannot be faulted. For taking pride that Shamcey was just about the only contestant from non-English language speaking countries to speak in English — many Filipinos betrayed their damaged culture, their willingness to elevate a foreign culture and language higher than ours.

I was squirming as I watched many of our countrymen assert with pride that Shamcey should have won the title if only for having spoken in English. What? Isn’t the Miss Universe Pageant a beauty contest? Why do these Filipinos make it look like a language proficiency test?

Frankly, through over 60 years of my life I have seen many of our countrymen make fools of themselves in front of foreigners they’re trying to impress. Of special note are people in positions of power who like to brag about the fringe benefits that they’re enjoying.

During the Marcos dictatorship, the son of a very powerful general was bragging to several Japanese guests about the privileges that he enjoys because of his father’s position. Clearly, he lacked the proper breeding and didn’t realize that in the eyes of educated people from a very ethical society like Japan — he just made a jackass of himself. If the son of a Japanese general uttered what he bragged about, that general may have to tender his resignation or even slice his stomach for shamefully siring such a son.

It’s not making a mountain out of a molehill when we raise this issue of how we look down on our culture and its many aspects — one of them our language. It is a molehill to the ignorant, the person who does not see the serious psychological fault and its ramifications to building the country we want to live in. It is an impeding mountain to one who can see how this counter productive mindset will undermine all the best efforts to improve Philippine society.

Those who were taking pride in Shamcey’s use of the English language during the Miss Universe Pageant do not realize that it could have been a point that the judges deducted from her. We must remember that many other countries do not suffer from a damaged culture like ours. Right thinking judges from countries that do not suffer from a cultural inferiority complex would certainly find it odd that our contestant did not speak in her native language.

When Janina San Miguel won the Miss Philippines World 2008 title, there was a big howl from some quarters. English clearly not her language, Janina stumbled through her answer, uttering wrong tenses in what can be considered an embarrassing example of bad sentence construction in the English language. Interviewed by GMA Network’s Jessica Soho after she won, Janina spoke in Filipino and made a much better account of her person.

The Filipino must come to grip with this self-destructing mechanism we nurture in our psyche. Young Filipinos, nearly 25 percent, admitted wishing that they were born as other nationals. This was shown in a 2003 survey on youth psychographics. Our national hero Jose Rizal must have been very disappointed. He called the youth the hope of the motherland.

Filipino manufacturers could not grow because Filipino consumers harbored a prejudice against Philippine-made products. As it was then and is still practiced today, many Filipinos consider the imported product as superior. From sub-standard products, the Japanese were able to produce world-class products because the Japanese consumers patronized Japanese brands even when these were still far from world class.

When the Japanese were flocking as tourists to the Philippines in the late 60s and early 70s, many Filipinos would comment that the Japanese were an odd people because they’d come to our country to ride in Japanese tourist buses, buy Japanese products and eat Japanese food in Japanese restaurants. When we should be admiring their deep sense of nationalism and imitating them — we mock them instead for having the qualities we shamefully lack.

Even when we had a good president, we didn’t seem to progress much and whatever improvements were made were easily undone. Filipinos should realize that nations became successful because they had a great people behind a good leader. It’s time we made ourselves a great people.

A diamond ring for Shalani Soledad

MANILA, Philippines - Valenzuela City councilor Shalani Soledad has received a diamond ring from no less than Pasig City Rep. Roman Romulo.

This was confirmed by Romulo’s sister, Agriculture Undersecretary Berna Romulo-Puyat, who was in a tete-a tete with reporters at the sidelines of her agency’s budget hearing at the House of Representatives plenary.

Romulo-Puyat was reacting to media reports that Soleded was seen wearing a diamond ring. She told media she texted her brother if that meant she was engaged.
At that exact time, her brother called back and within earshot of the media, confirmed that he did give Soledad with a diamond ring. He even asked: “Masama ba?”
ABS-CBN News later asked Romulo if the ring is a diamond ring or simply a ring with a diamond but Romulo could not give an answer. A gift of a diamond ring is usually taken to be an engagement ring.
Romulo-Puyat said she likes Shalani, even if she only met her once. She said the Valenzuela City councilor and former girlfriend of President Aquino was introduced to the Romulo family in a family dinner 2 weeks ago.

Romulo-Puyat said her brother only introduces to the family ladies he takes seriously.
She recalled that the last time her brother introduced a lady to their family was 4 years ago. She revealed her brother asked her not miss the family dinner 2 weeks ago. She said Shalani brought food for sharing with the family.

Chrome browser now allows remote computer control

A new tool for Google's Chrome browser now allows computer users to remotely control another machine or get remote help without leaving their desks.

The Chrome Remote Desktop Beta allows users to share with or get access to another computer by providing a one-time authentication code.

"One potential use of this version is the remote IT helpdesk case. The helpdesk can use the Chrome Remote Desktop BETA to help another user, while conversely a user can receive help by setting up a sharing session without leaving their desk," said a description of the extension on the Chrome Web Store.

Chrome Remote Desktop Beta is cross-platform, meaning one can connect any two computers that have a Chrome browser, including Windows, Linux, Mac and Chromebooks.

Google hinted it is working on a future version that can let one access one's own computer remotely.

Presently, the extension allows access only to the specific person the user identifies for one time only, and the sharing session is fully secured.

A separate article on tech site CNET said the Chrome Remote Desktop Beta is a browser-based equivalent of remote desktop software for conventional operating systems.

"Such software is handy for IT administrators managing employees' machines, people taking care of their relatives' computers, or individuals getting access to their own machines from afar," it said.

CNET noted Google's Chrome OS is geared in part for organizations that want to lower their computer administration costs, and remote management is an important factor when it comes to that goal.

Apple's iPhone 4S breaks early order record

People who want the new $200 Apple phone 4S may have to get in line on Friday because U.S. wireless phone carriers appear to have sold out.

Sprint Nextel, which is selling the iPhone for the first time, said it sold all of its $200 iPhone 4S and is not taking back orders. Sprint still is selling more expensive versions of the phone with higher memory.

Rival AT&T said on its website on Monday afternoon that customers ordering the same iPhone at that point would not receive their phones for another 21 to 28 days. Verizon's website said it will ship the phones by Oct. 20.

Orders for the latest iPhone, the last product the company introduced before the death of its co-founder Steve Jobs, surpassed 1 million in the first 24 hours, beating Apple's previous one-day record of 600,000 sales for the iPhone 4 according to Apple.

The news pushed the company's shares up 5 percent to close at $388.81 on the Nasdaq stock market.

The new phone, which will appear on store shelves this Friday, disappointed some fans when Apple introduced it last week, but it is proving to be a bigger draw because more telephone companies are carrying it and it will appear in more countries, analysts said.

Another big factor may be Jobs. Massive outpourings of grief and sympathy over his death last Wednesday at the age of 56, along with testaments to his genius and status as a visionary business leader in the media and by Apple products users online may have spurred sales,

"Many potential Apple customers, who have been on the fences before, will probably now want to (buy) it," said Steven Osinski, marketing professor at San Diego State University. "It's no different than when John Lennon was assassinated, sales of Beatles records shot up for a little while."

The initial skepticism from fans on the iPhone 4S was overridden by their desire to honor Jobs, said Barbara Sullivan, Managing Partner of Sullivan, a branding and marketing agency.

"The preorders may also be part of respect for what Jobs has done," she said. "It's almost like putting flowers by his headquarters."

Chief Executive Tim Cook said in a memo to staff on Monday that a celebration of Jobs' life will be held on Oct. 19.

The employee event will be held at an outdoor amphitheater at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California, Cook said in the memo, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters.

"Like many of you, I have experienced the saddest days of my lifetime and shed many tears during the past week," Cook said in the email memo. "And I've found comfort in both telling and listening to stories about Steve."

Bigger roll-out

The iPhone 4S, which many Apple watchers saw as a minor follow-up to its previous model and featuring only incremental hardware upgrades, is going on sale in seven countries. The previous version was introduced in five.

Stores in the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the UK will start selling the device on Friday. It will be available in 22 countries by the end of October, Apple said.

"It had everything people wanted. The market was disappointed, but the customers looked past the headline to see the content of the device itself," said Hudson Square analyst Daniel Ernst.

The 4S is on the Sprint network, AT&T Inc and Verizon Wireless -- three carriers for the first time in United States. In Japan, Apple added KDDI Corp as a distributor.

"Part of what's going to make this roll-out so much bigger is that the availability of the product is going to be much better," said Michael Yoshikami, CEO of YCMNET Advisors, which owns Apple shares. "You are going to see sales records set at a faster pace than people really would expect."
Analyst Colin Gillis said Apple still has a long way to go to meet Wall Street's sales expectations.

"It's not the first million. We know there's a large loyal base of users. They need to sell more than 20 million of these in this quarter to hit estimates," said Gillis. "Apple needs to break records to hit expectations."

Apple also must try to stem market share gains by phones running Google Inc's Android software. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, which uses Android, is catching up with Apple in worldwide market share.

AT&T, which had exclusive U.S. rights to sell the iPhone for more than three years, took more than 200,000 orders for the 4S in the first 12 hours after it went on sale. — Reuters

Globe PowerSurf vs. Smart Always On

Smart first introduced the volume-based pricing plan for mobile phones with the Always On and was followed by Globe with their PowerSurf plans. Both might seem to offer similar packages but allowed for some differences depending on consumers’ usage patterns.
Let’s look at the plans being offered on Smart Always On and Globe PowerSurf.

Here’s a shortlist of the differences between the two carriers:
  • Smart Always On offers more price plans with 7 compared to 3 for PowerSurf.
  • Always On has the cheapest package at Php20 for 25MB.
  • Globe PowerSurf 99 is the best bargain at 50MB for 30 days. Assuming you only use FourSquare, Php99 a month for almost unlimited access is great. It’s also the cheapest monthly plan.
  • PowerSurf 299 at 300MB is cheaper than Always On 300 at 250MB.
  • PowerSurf 499 at 1GB is cheaper than Always On 750 at 1GB.
I’ve tried the Always On 20 and Always On 30 on my Android phone before and works well. I tried Always On 200 yesterday on my Smart Rocket and it was good but very expensive.
I’ve also tried PowerSurf 99 on my iPhone and it lasted me 3 days but that was with some web surfing included. I subscribed again and now on my 6th day with PowerSurf 99. Not bad.
Anyone out there using PowerSurf or Always On on their smartphones? What’s your usage like, how much are you spending and which one’s the best fit for your usage.

SmartBro Rocket WiFi Plus: Php6495 for 20Mbps

Smart has finally unveiled its newest mobile internet device — the Smart Bro Rocket WiFi Plus — which claims speeds of up to 20Mbps.

The SmartBro Rocket WiFi Plus is an upgrade to their Pocket WiFi which used to be only up to 5Mbps and in conjunction to the previously released Rocket WiFi dongle. This one has the ability to share WiFi with up to 5 devices.

It’s not yet readily available in prepaid but is now on a pre-order period for now. The one-time price for the kit is Php6,495.

The catch — Php200 per 180MB, just like the Rocket Plug-It. No UnliSurf plans. The prepaid kit comes with a free 180MB allocation.
Now that’s pretty expensive if you asked me. I think you’d easily consume 180MB in single day.
